Frequently Asked Questions
Does Dr. Grullon accept my insurance plan?
Our practice accepts a range of private insurance plans, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare, as well as several Medicaid plans, including Horizon NJ Health, Aetna Better Health of NJ, and NJ FamilyCare. If your plan is not listed above, please call our office at (973) 340-6666 to confirm before scheduling.
What is NJ FamilyCare, and does my child qualify?
NJ FamilyCare is New Jersey's publicly funded health insurance program, which includes Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Children under 19 may qualify regardless of immigration status, and there is no waiting period for children to become eligible. Adults ages 19–64 with income up to 138% of the Federal Poverty Level may also apply. To apply or learn more, visit njfamilycare.dhs.state.nj.us or call 1-800-701-0710.
Do I need to pay a monthly premium for NJ FamilyCare?
As of July 1, 2021, monthly premiums are no longer required for any NJ FamilyCare plan. However, any previously unpaid balances are still owed. For the most up-to-date information, contact NJ FamilyCare directly at 1-800-701-0710.
My child has an HMO plan. Do I need to select Dr. Grullon as their Primary Care Physician (PCP)?
Yes. If your child is enrolled in an HMO plan, you will need to designate Dr. Grullon as their Primary Care Physician through your insurance provider. Please contact your insurer directly to make this update before your first appointment.
What if my family's income is too high for NJ FamilyCare but I don't have private insurance?
New Jersey residents who do not qualify for NJ FamilyCare may be eligible to purchase coverage through GetCoveredNJ, the state's official health insurance marketplace. Visit getcovered.nj.gov to explore your options and determine eligibility.
What should I bring to my child's first appointment?
Please bring the following to your child's first visit: a current insurance card, a photo ID, your child's complete immunization records, and medical records from any previous providers. If you are transferring care, a completed medical release form will help facilitate a smooth transition.
Can I change my child's insurance plan outside of the Open Enrollment period in New Jersey?
In most cases, changes to health insurance plans are limited to the Open Enrollment period, which typically runs from November 1 through January 31 in New Jersey. However, certain life events, such as the birth or adoption of a child, loss of existing coverage, marriage, or a change in household income, may qualify your family for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), allowing you to enroll in or modify coverage outside of the standard window.
If you believe your family qualifies for a SEP, visit getcovered.nj.gov or contact the GetCoveredNJ helpline at 1-833-677-1010 for guidance. For Medicaid and NJ FamilyCare, enrollment is open year-round with no restricted enrollment period.
What vaccines are required for my child to be covered under NJ health insurance?
Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and New Jersey state law, all health insurance plans, including those offered through GetCoveredNJ and NJ FamilyCare, must cover routine childhood immunizations at no cost to your family. This means vaccines recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), such as those for measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), polio, hepatitis B, and varicella, must be covered without copayments or deductibles when administered by an in-network provider.
At Healthy Happy Children Pediatrics, we follow the immunization schedule recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and administer all required vaccines during well-child visits. If you have questions about which vaccines are due at your child's next visit, or whether a specific vaccine is covered under your plan, please call our office at (973) 340-6666 and a member of our team will be glad to assist you.
What is the difference between an HMO and a PPO plan in New Jersey?
In New Jersey, HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) and PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans differ primarily in how you access care and manage costs. With an HMO plan, your child must receive care from providers within the plan's network, and a designated Primary Care Physician (PCP), such as Dr. Grullon, coordinates all referrals to specialists. HMO plans generally carry lower monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs, but offer less flexibility in choosing providers. PPO plans, on the other hand, allow you to see any licensed provider, in-network or out-of-network, without a referral, giving your family greater flexibility.
However, this flexibility typically comes with higher premiums and cost-sharing. When selecting a plan through GetCoveredNJ or your employer, it is recommended that you carefully review the plan's provider network, premium costs, copayments, and referral requirements to determine which option best meets your family's healthcare needs. If you are unsure whether Dr. Grullon participates in your specific HMO or PPO network, please contact our office at (973) 340-6666 before scheduling your child's first appointment.
